Beverage Cartons

What are Beverage Cartons?

Beverage cartons are a widely used form of packaging to protect fresh drink and food products, enabling distribution either at ambient temperatures or under refrigerated conditions.

As well as protecting the freshness, flavors, and nutritional qualities of the product during transportation, whilst on sale and in the home, the carton is convenient to use and provides optimal shelf-life.

Beverage cartons are widely used to protect both fresh and long-life drink and food products, enabling distribution either at ambient temperatures or under refrigerated conditions. They protect the freshness, flavors, and nutritional qualities of essential products in everyday life:

  • Milk and dairy products
  • Fruit juices and other beverages
  • Soy milk and soy products
  • Soups, vegetable products, and sauces

What is the composition of beverage cartons?

6 layer pack
  1. Polyethylene – protects against outside moisture
  2. Paper – for stability and strength
  3. Polyethylene – adhesion layer
  4. Aluminium foil – oxygen, flavour and light barrier
  5. Polymer – adhesion layer
  6. Polymer – seals in the liquid

Beverage cartons are made of (on average,by weight):

  • 75% paperboard, a renewable material when the forests are managed responsibly
  • 20% polymers, mostly polyethylene, to prevent leakage
  • 5% aluminium, to protect drinks from light and oxygen

Each of these three components are recyclable, indicating that a used beverage carton can be completely recycled if processed correctly.
